How Solar Panels Work

In the last few years, solar panels have really hit the mainstream. There are more solar panels for sale than there have ever been. But, do you know how solar panels work? We all know that they convert sunlight into electricity, but how does this really happen? Almost all of us have used calculators powered by solar panels. We know if we cover up the light that the calculator stops working. So what’s really taking place.

Let’s start from the beginning.

Solar cells are also known as photovoltaic (PV) cells. The word photo means “light” and the word voltaic means “electricity”. Put it together and you get light electricity.

Solar Cells are made from materials called semi-conductors. The most common are made of silicone, but we are also starting to see organic materials being used as well. When light hits the semi-conductor a portion of that light gets absorbed. This process discharges electrons. Using an electric field these electrons are forced to move in a cetain direction which gives them current. The amount of current with the amount of voltage (free electrons) determines how many watts the solar panel produces.

Medal conductors can then be attached to the solar panels to allow the electricity to be drawn from the panel to a place where it can be either used or stored.

So now that you know how solar panels work, what does it mean for you? It means you can recognize what’s important. As you can see, the more sunlight that a panel can absorb, the more free electrons you will have, and the more energy the solar panel will make. This is generally referred to as the solar panels efficiency. A solar panel that can absorb 20% of sunlight will make more electricity (produce more watts) than one that only absorbs 13%.

Currently the highest efficiency solar panels are being made out of silicone. The problem is that silicone is a limited resource and so is getting more and more expensive. In the last few years however, we are also seeing solar panels being made out of sustainable organic materials. These aren’t as efficient as the silicone solar panels, but they are relatively new and will improve over time.

Due to improved efficiencies and improved manufacturing processes, solar panels cost about a quarter of what they did just a couple of years ago.

If you check out the prices of solar panels for sale a long with discounts from the government, you may find that you can finally get rid of your energy bill.

3M Solar Panels For Sale:

A new advancement in solar panel technology has been made, and there will be a new type of solar panels for sale available next year. 3M, a company who is greatly known for their ingenuity, has designed a solar panel film for sale that can be added to windows. This type of solar panel is a big step forward for solar panel technology, for a couple of reasons. The first is since it is basically a film, it can realistically be added almost anywhere. Second, is that it is different from most solar panels on the market in that it is made from organic materials rather than silicone. This means that it will be cheaper and also more sustainable.

The film is made by printing the organic photovoltaic material onto sheets that are then turned into film. This currently isn’t a cheap process, but will get cheaper the more they produce, and as the production methods get better.

3M is currently planning to sell this solar panel film to companies and corporations and then move onto consumers once prices have come down.

These solar panels for sale are only about 20% as efficient as the most efficient solar panels on the market, but have some benefits as well. Firstly, the manufacturing process should allow the panels to greatly drop in price over time. Secondly, the panels also block sunlight which act as a sunshade and can reduce temperatures. This can be very substantial for large corporate building and for homes a like.

If you are looking at putting solar panels on your home, then you will want to watch when these solar panels go on sale. Especially once they get the manufacturing process at full scale and the prices start coming down. Since silicone is very expensive, this really could be one of the first “global” applications we see.

Home Owners Guide to Solar Panel Electricity

There are a lot of reasons for wanting to switch your homes energy to solar panels. Getting rid of your energy bill, gaining independence from the local energy company, saving the environment, and getting power to a remote area are all good reasons, but it can all be a bit overwhelming, and you will certainly have a lot of questions. Where can I buy them? How much will they cost? Will they work in my area? How much power will they make? Where can I put them? Are there rebates and government programs available to lower the cost?

The internet is a great source of information, but it does have one problem: too much information. It can be difficult to find the right information  and to tell if you are getting good information at all. Installing solar panels on houses, RVs, and now cars has just recently gone mainstream and there are a lot of false rumors that go a long with that. The “my friend’s friend” kind of thing.

On top of that, there are now more solar panels for sale than ever before. We are seeing solar panel companies come out of just about everywhere to get in on the profits in the industry. It is great that there are more options, but choosing the right solar panels and solar panel system for your house can be a bit confusing.

So what should you do?

Read

First, read up. There is a lot of great info on the web, but don’t pass over books either. A few dollars spent on some good books might save you a lot when you buy the solar system for your home. Below, is a link to a free PDF put out by the US Department of Energy.

A Home Owners Guide To Going Solar

Talk

Once you have a basic understanding of what you want and need, get out and talk to your local solar companies and your local government. You will gain a lot of info and it should help you decide what solar panels you want to buy, what company you want to use, how much electricity you will needs, etc. You should also learn if there are any government programs that will lower the cost of installing solar panels.

Worlds Largest Solar Farm Switches to Solar Panels

I talk a lot about the cost of solar panels for sale dropping. In the last couple of years the prices have been dropping consistently over the range of solar panels. Since the solar power companies are also claiming lower returns it is hard to know how long this will last.

However, proof that solar panels are getting cheaper and cheaper is the recent news that Solar Millenium AG, the largest farm, will be switching from thermal solar to solar photovoltaic panels. The company will be installing the 500MW farm in California.

So what does this mean for you? Well, that depends on who you are. But if you are the person who wants to install solar panels on your home, cabin, or RV, but have felt it’s too expensive, this might be the time it finally makes financial sense. More and more companies are making solar panels and the number of cheap solar panels are increasing daily.  In addition, governments are getting serious about green power and offer all kinds of loans,  grants, refunds, and tax cuts. The city I live in has  also recently installed a large solar field that will be generating a substantial percent of power for the city. I recommend you find out what kind of program your government is offering.

In addition, remember that you can also save additional money by installing solar panels yourself, and even by assembling them. There are a lot of options to get solar panels on your house. You just have to do a little bit of research to find out which one is best for you.

Cheap Solar Panels For Sale

Solar panels have been around for a very long time. They were on my calculator as a kid, and they were around a long time before that. However, it is only in the last few years that they have really started to make progress.

Due to the raising gas prices and energy prices, solar panels are becoming a much more realistic and better option. People who are tired of paying raising electrical bills and paying surcharges for no particular reason are fighting back and purchasing solar panels. since more people want solar panels on their homes, homes that already have solar panels installed are selling with large premiums. Great news for anyone who wants to put solar panels on their home.

However, even with the recent increase solar panel demand and the money that companies are putting into research, there really aren’t any cheap solar panels for sale.  Choosing the right time to purchase and doing your research can save you a lot of money, but you will still have to put out quite a bit of money to get your solar panels. There are however two ways that you can get solar panels cheap.

One is to check your local and national government websites to see what rebates are being offered. As more and more countries are pushing for clean energy, governments are offering a lot of rebates. The amount will vary by location, but in many cases they are quite substantial. With rebates and some good negotiations you might be able to get your house equipped with solar panels for almost nothing.

You can find the US Energy website here.

The other method is for the DIY. With a bit of work you can assemble and install solar panels yourself for a fraction of the cost. This method  will require a bit more work (purchasing parts, assembling them, installing them, and routing the system into your house), but can allow you to be running on solar panel electricity for a much smaller investment.

However, you don’t have to guess through the process. There is a program that will take you through the process for step by step with videos and detailed instructions.

You can find that program here: DIY Solar Panels.

Sharp pushes for Solar Panels in Japan

A few months ago I wrote about Japan’s push for solar panels by the year 2030. I felt that it wasn’t enough and that it wasn’t soon enough. Sharp, one of Japan’s largest electronics companies, and the largest solar manufacture is on the forefront of Japan new considerations for energy.

After the recent (and still ongoing) nuclear power plant crisis in Japan, Japan is rethinking it’s energy policies. The main push is currently to reduce power usage, putting a strain on large electronic companies such as Sharp. However, they also stand to gain because they are the largest producer of solar panels. Though according to the latest article in the Wall Street Journal, Sharp seems to be hesitant on which road they would like to take.

A push for solar panels and more efficient energy would help them sell more solar panels, but solar panels do not have a high return for Sharp, and the policy changes may cause companies like Sharp  to pay more for their energy usage (shouldn’t be a problem if Sharp was using more solar power).

Having lived in Japan for some time now, I can say that Japan does not adapt to change easy and big policy changes are always met with a lot of resistance. Can Japan push into a green energy country? As much as I would like to say “yes”, I have my doubts.

Solar Panels Increase the Value of Homes

One more reason to take a look at the solar panels for sale right now. Solar Panels increase the value when selling a house. According to a study in the New York times, houses with a relatively new solar panel system were seeing premium prices over other comparable houses of about $17,000. People who have added solar panels to a house already standing (not installed when the house was built) have seen premiums of nearly three times that amount.

So what does it mean? Well, one of the arguments against solar panels has always been that it takes time to get your investment back. And that if you sell your home before that time, you will lose that investment. However, now that solar panel homes are receiving a premium price, this just isn’t the case any more.

Also, this study was done from 2001-2009. Since then, a lot of companies have entered the solar panel market and there are more solar panels for sale. There are more types and the prices are coming down in general.

So, premium prices for homes with solar panels, more solar panels for sale, lowering solar panel prices, increases in costs of energy from the energy company, and the ability to sell unused energy to the power companies means it is getting easier and easier to get your initial investment back.

More Solar Panels for Sale

The more solar panels for sale the better. The more companies who enter the market the better. If there are more companies competing to sell their solar panels, then the consumers win. If there is only one company, then they get to pretty much charge what they want, but as more and more companies enter the market, the prices come down due to competition and improved products.

This is why it is great news that Q-Cells, a German Solar Company has entered the US market to sell their solar panels. Their main products is a flexible film solar panel that directly competes with First Solar’s flexible solar panels.

However, Q-Cells claims that their solar panels are more efficient, absorbing 13% to First Solar’s 11.7% efficiency. Q-Cell said their thin flexible solar panels are good for houses that do not get as much direct sunlight, and that they panels are more durable than competing solar panels.

So if you are in the market for solar panels, then you have one more option to consider. I believe that the competition will continue to increase and we will see more and more competition in the solar panel market.

RV Solar Panels

When you want to use solar panel electricity to power your house, you consider things like cost per watt, overall price, ease of installation, best location, and maintenance. When looking at the amount of power we will need to power an entire house, cost per watt and overall cost are especially important. We can be much more flexible on the type of panels we choose and where we put them. When it comes to RV solar panels we have a whole new set of criteria we should use.

While all of the criteria I have mentioned above are still important, the order of importance tends to change a bit. Since we are in an RV our space is limited. So more than cost per watt, we have to care about watt per inch. There won’t be a lot of space to mount solar panels on your RV, so you are going to need small solar panels that provide the maximum amount of power. In addition, you will want something that is designed to hold up to rough conditions. When you put solar panels on your house you can choose where to put them and make sure they are protected. You don’t always have that benefit with RV Solar panels, so durability is very important.

Now, as I’ve mentioned before, because of the recent improvements in solar panel technology and the increase in demand the number of small solar panels for sale have been increasing. So have the number and types of RV solar panels. This is a good thing!

There are couple of options. One is to go with a complete kit. Basically, you just choose the amount of watts you want and then mount it up to your RV. The kits come pretty much ready made and can be installed very easily by anyone. Before buying a kit make sure you know how much power you will need. The below kit is an RV solar panel that is designed for flat mount and comes ready to install.

Another option is to buy the RV solar panels separate and set up the system yourself. There are a lot of solar panels to choose from, but if you are looking for something durable, then take a look at the  link below which is a non-glass solar panel designed to be highly durable and almost unbreakable. This is a smaller panel however, so you will need a couple if you are looking to power your entire RV.

Solar Panels for Sale: Solar Panels Make You Money

Solar panels and green energy have made great progress in the last few days. The NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher recently said that new solar panels will be able to connect them to the power grid and that utility companies will be required to pay for customers for the extra power their solar panels make. This has actually been the standard in some areas, however some utility companies where refusing to allow customers to connect their solar panels to the grid.

So what does this mean for you? It means that there has never been a better time to buy solar panels. Not only are there more cheap solar panels for sale than ever before, the efficiency for each size has gone up, and now the government is finally starting to pass legislation that is making running your house on solar power electricity easier and cheaper than ever.

In addition to the government taking actions against utility companies refusing to add solar panels on to the grid, many governments are also offering grants, tax incentives, low-interest loans, and rebates to install solar panels. With these discounts, and the fact that you can sell the power you make, going solar has never made more sense.
